Mrs. Hayes Kindergarten Class

November 14, 2008
Dear Families,
Ten weeks have come and gone already! During this past ten weeks we have worked with the letters “c, m, n, a, p, r, s and t” and the sight words, “a, I, my, the, go, to and is”. We have also begun blending sounds into words and have worked with the “at, an, and am” word families and just this week we worked with “ad”. We talked about being both sad and mad and drew pictures of what those feelings look like.
This week we also introduced the letter “Dd”, the sight word “like” and wrote in our journals. Today we brainstormed a long list of things we are thankful for and then wrote and illustrated them. Math found us making a turkey for our number booklets with 7 feathers and we continued to work with more and less and number meaning. Many of the children are using the number lines at their seats to help them recognize their numbers. Go fish is a great game to play with kindergartners to help them better recognize those numbers.
Ellie was our VIP this week. On Monday she brought in a beautiful picture poster board to share with the class. We learned that her favorite color is pink, she likes to eat hotdogs, but not spinach, she enjoys playing with her Bratz dolls and she is learning to write words. On Wednesday Ellie’s mom joined us to help celebrate Ellie’s 5th birthday. We made pet rocks and ate ice cream. Yum, Yum! On Thursday Ellie’s grandma joined her for lunch and today she was joined by dad. I’m sure she enjoyed being our VIP with all of the attention.
Once more I would like to thank everyone for the wonderful job they did on their turkeys. They will all be up for Parent-Teacher Conferences on Monday so enjoy looking at them.
It is tradition in my class to have a yearly Thanksgiving Feast. This years Feast is going to be on Friday, November 21st. We will put our tables together as one long table and some of us will wear our Indian headbands and some will wear our pilgrim hats. The class will sample various foods such as corn bread, chicken, and Impossible Pumpkin Pie. Another food we make is Friendship Fruit Salad. I am asking that each child bring in either a piece of fresh fruit or a can of fruit. The fruit may be brought in at any time next week.
Our activities for next week include:
• Making placemats for our feast
• Completing our Theme 3 test
• Working with rhyming words
• Making books called In Went
• Making pilgrim hats and Indian headbands
• Learning more about our VIP Ethan
• Making Impossible Pumpkin Pie
